چکیده

To elucidate the origin of life on the earth and its evolution, one of the best methods is to classify organisms on the basis of their biochemical properties, and for this comparative biochemical studies are necessary. Such studies have been made in a variety of studies by various workers. For example, hemoglobins were studied by Pauling and Zuckerkandl (1) a.nd Haurowitz and Hardin (2)) the visual pigments by Wald (3)) and lactate dehydrogenases by Kaplan et al. (4). These comparative studies were made only on animals. Studies on the visual pigments are inevitably limited to animals with eyes, whereas studies on hemoglobins were principally on animals with blood containing hemoglobin. Furthermore, it is known that these materials vary appreciably under the different environmental conditions in which the organisms live (3). This may mean that although the phylogenies established on the basis of comparative biochemical studies on such materials are very similar to those established from anatomical characters, it is difficult from such studies to distinguish the more primitive properties of these materials which the ancestral organisms may have had. Cytochromes are present in all aerobic organisms and in some anaerobic microorganisms, and are very fundamental components. Thus, it seems very advantageous to select cytochromes as materials for comparative biochemical studies. Among the cytochromes, cytochrome c is generally easily extractable by salt solution, and the procedures for its purification have been established in our laboratory (5). Therefore, we studied the comparative biochemistry of cytochrome c. Furthermore, as it was found (6) that the chemical entity of housefly cytochrome c does not change during metamorphosis on the basis of its reactivity with cytochrome oxidases, cytochrome c seems to vary very little with environmental conditions. Thus, it may be that the cytochromes c have changed little during evolution except when great changes occurred in the organisms, and that they have retained the properties of the ancestral organisms. In studies on the evolution of organisms, it seems important to classify the organisms roughly. Thus, to study their evolution, it seems to be very valuable to study the comparative biochemistry of organisms in terms of the properties of their cytochromes

Respiratory enzymes of the silkmoth Antheraea pernyi in relation to metamorphosis and pupal diapause.

-1. Wing epidermis from diapausing and non-diapausing silkmoths (Antheraea pernyi) was assayed for NADH [nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (reduced form)] oxidase, NADHand succinate-cyctochrome c reductases, and cytochrome c oxidase. 2. Diapausing pupae showed a marked decline in activities after pupation and the same subsequent profile of very low activities reported for diapausing Cecropia si...

Mixed function oxidases in kidney and duodenum of camel, guinea pig and rat.

The activities of the drug-metabolizing enzymes, aniline 4-hydroxylase, benzphetamine N-demethylase and 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase have been measured in vitro in kidneys and duodenum of camels (Camelus dromedarius), guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and rats (Rattus norvegicus). In these species, levels of hepatic microsomal parameters namely microsomal protein, cytochrome P(450), cytochrome b(5...

Cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenase system mediated hydrocarbon metabolism and antioxidant enzyme responses in prawn, Macrobrachium malcolmsonii.

We investigated the alteration of cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenase enzymes and antioxidant enzymes in response to oil effluent in freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium malcolmsonii. The prawns were exposed to two sublethal (10% [0.91 ppt] and 25% [2.3 ppt] of 5-day median lethal concentration) concentrations of oil. After 30 days, treated prawns were transferred into untreated freshwater and d...

Molecular Characterization and Phylogeny Analysis Based on Sequences of Cytochrome Oxidase gene From Hemiscorpius lepturus of Iran

Abstract: Background: Hemiscorpius lepturus is a medically important scorpion found along the Iranian borders, especially near to Khuzestan Province in the south-west of Iran. This is the only non-buthid scorpion which is potentially lethal in southern Iran and is responsible for severe dermonecrotic scorpionism. OBJECTIVES: In this study, DNA fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase ...

Are long chain acyl CoAs responsible for suppression of mitochondrial metabolism in hibernating 13-lined ground squirrels?

Hibernation in 13-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) is associated with a substantial suppression of whole-animal metabolism. We compared the metabolism of liver mitochondria isolated from torpid ground squirrels with those from interbout euthermic (IBE; recently aroused from torpor) and summer euthermic conspecifics. Succinate-fuelled state 3 respiration, calculated relative t...
